My male maine coon cat won't let me groom his belly or back legs - now his hair is all matted. What can i do?

He loves his back being combed but completely freaks out and get's aggressive when i try to groom his tummy and back legs. He's in pretty bad shape now and really badly needs a wash and to be clipped. How can i calm him down enough to do it?
